Container Deposit Scheme to Create Jobs in Western NSW

MPREC is partnering with Australian company Refunda to help the remote regions of NSW share the social and economic benefits of NSW EPA’s Container Deposit Scheme.

“Under the Container Deposit Scheme anyone who returns an empty eligible beverage container to an eligible collection point will be eligible for a 10-cent refund,” said MPREC’s acting CEO, Rene Wykes, “But our proposal is about so much more than reducing litter across the state.”

By May next year, MPREC’s proposal could see an additional 15-20 new jobs being established in Western NSW, with professional development and operations preparation to commence before an official Container Deposit start-date of 1 July 2017. 

“We are seeking to establish and maintain collection depots across remote NSW, not only to enable community members access the refund, but also providing training opportunities to disadvantaged community members in these areas. It’s a real win-win for the economy and environment, with the financial benefits extending beyond those employed to work in the collection network.”

Work is already underway on the fabrication of up to 100 cages for use as collection points. This work alone will bring 3 new casual jobs to remote NSW.



“The Container Deposit Scheme itself will kick off in July 2017, and we’re hoping to offer both fixed and mobile sites at that time. We are excited to see the result of our proposal, which not only helps support the Premier’s goal of reducing the volume of litter in the stare by 40 per cent by 2020 but also supports a commitment to jobs growth, particularly in remote and more disadvantaged areas.”
